He is a figurative sculptor, who works mostly in bronze. He was influenced by Charles Despiau, while spending time at the Musée Bourdelle, Paris.〔Windsor, Alan (2002). ''British sculptors of the twentieth century''. Burlington, VT, Ashgate.〕 Doubleday was born in 1947 in Langford, near Maldon, Essex and studied at Stowe and sculpture at Goldsmiths College. He has enjoyed a successful career as a public sculptor since his first one-man show at the Waterhouse and Dodd Gallery, London in 1968. He created two- and three-dimensional art and when he created the statue of Nelson he agreed that the sum would be given to charity.
